I recently traveled to southern Missouri to learn more about a
grassroots movement coming from the heartland of America that will not
only enable you to consume some of the world’s healthiest foods but
provide the opportunity to feed your family for free.
Beyond Organic is the culmination of a 15-year mission of
Jordan
Rubin, the founder of
Garden of Life. I have been a friend of Jordan for
more than a decade and have seen the amazing success he has been blessed
with in the natural-health movement. I am honored to have been involved
in this new project because it fits my values on so many levels. I’ve
written about how terribly sick Jordan was when he was 18 and going on
19. He was dying of Crohn’s disease, which led to many other ailments.
None of the dozens of doctors he visited could help, and he was in the
hospital dying when he breathed what he thought would be his last
breath. Nearly one year later, he found himself on a healing journey
that took him to Mission Beach, California. We published the pictures of
this emaciated young man and son of a natural-health physician who was
brought back from the brink of death by a health plan he would later
call The Maker’s Diet. We published the story of this miracle healing in
Healthy Living magazine in the fall of 2001. I had the privilege of
serving as editor and publisher for Jordan’s first book,
Patient Heal
Thyself. (Also, see Jordan’s updated version of this book called
“Restoring Your Digestive Health.”) After his return to health, Jordan
revolutionized the world of nutrition by championing the concepts of
traditional fermented foods, rich in probiotics and loaded with
nutrients.
Down to Earth in Missouri
I first learned of
Beyond Organic from Jordan, but I never could have
dreamed it would take shape the way it has. When Jordan was very ill, he
was healed by consuming a diet rich in whole foods and probiotics.
Unfortunately, the very foods Jordan needed were being banned almost
everywhere, and California was no exception.
At the time, living in a motor home, he went daily to a
natural-health market waiting first in line for the raw cultured dairy
products that were aiding his recovery. But some days, they weren’t
available due to lack of supply and/or interference from the regulators
who were against this dairy, even though it offers tremendous health
benefits. Jordan literally lived in fear that he would lose his supply.
This fear always motivated him, and when he was getting better he
promised the Lord he would do something to make sure these beyond
organic foods and beverages were available to everyone who needed them
because of their valuable healing properties. Jordan began to build his
vision in the heart of America—Missouri.
Beyond Organic is a food and beverage company with products of
unequaled quality and efficacy— and available from their farms to your
family. The mission is to transform the health of this nation and world,
one life at a time. The company is vertically integrated with 9,000
acres, thousands of cattle, certified-organic processing facilities, and
pristine springs that produce millions of gallons of water per day.
The official company launch is scheduled for November 2011. Rather
than using a traditional retail strategy to distribute its products,
Beyond Organic has chosen a “mission marketing” model to reach as many
people as possible with these unique and effective foods and beverages.
As part of the Beyond Organic “Insider” program, you can begin learning
more about their mission and products, reserve your spot in the
organization and begin building your own team between now and the
official launch in November 2011. As a Beyond Organic Insider, you will
be able to learn proven, team-developing strategies. You will be invited
to participate in company-sponsored trainings that will guide you as you
share these products with people you care about. “I’m proud of the
opportunity we have created for people, and we look forward to
partnering with millions to transform the health of this nation one life
at a time, while also providing the opportunity for people to get their
Beyond Organic foods and beverages for free and even achieve the
financial independence that they have always dreamed about,” Jordan
says.

Green-Fed Beef
Green-Fed (grass-fed) beef is better for human health than grain-fed
beef in 10 different ways, according to the most comprehensive analysis
to date. The 2009 study was a joint effort between the United States
Department of Agriculture and researchers at Clemson University in South
Carolina. Compared with grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef was:
- Lower in total fat
- Higher in beta-carotene
- Higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol)
- Higher in the B vitamins thiamin and riboflavin
- Higher in the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium
- Higher in total omega-3s
- Healthier, with a better ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids
(1.65 vs. 4.84)
- Higher in conjugated linolenic acid (CLA, cis-9 trans-11), a
potential cancer fighter
- Higher in vaccenic acid (which can be transformed into CLA)
- Lower in the saturated fats linked with heart Disease

Jordan envisions an army of people sharing the benefits of
Beyond Organic foods and beverages delivered directly to their homes. For the
first time, you can know exactly where the food you consume and feed
your family with comes from and that it is created using sustainable,
beyond-organic practices. I believe Beyond Organic is the next great
movement in sustainable eating and living. Best of all, you can be one
of the first to consume these foods and beverages and share them with
everyone you know.
Going Beyond Organic in Missouri
Amid rolling green hills and white oak, hickory, cedar, sycamore,
maple and grass and clover, Jordan Rubin, founder and CEO of Garden of
Life, led a group of reporters, friends and family. He does many talks
around Missouri these days—he just finished speaking before more than
250 people at Mama Jean’s in Springfield and hundreds more at Nature’s
Pantry in Independence—that having a small group like this including his
kids is really a vacation. But when you are going beyond organic, you
don’t have a whole lot of actual vacation time. And that’s what Jordan
is doing these days: going
beyond organic.
We drove down the road and past grassland into Beyond Organic
Springs. We met Bill Johnson who used to work in Montana; he manages
this ranch and lives on the land with his family including his three
young children.
Joining me and Ana, my wife, was Allan Nation from Mississippi,
publisher of Stockman Grass Farmer, the premier magazine for grass
farming. From Nebraska was grazing expert Terry Gompert, holistic
management certified educator and extension agent with the University of
Nebraska, and David Wetzel, one of the most progressive grass farmers in
America. He was the first since Dr. Weston A. Price to produce the famed
X-Factor Butter Oil, which Jordan and his wife Nicki have been using in
their children’s infant formulas for nearly six years.
"The water is everything," Jordan says. "It’s why we chose this
particular property. The flow has been measured at more than 750,000 to
900,000 gallons daily. Our spring feeds rivers, and the large lake,"
where his six-year-old Joshua was fishing for bluegill in the lily pads
as we walked.
Twin calves were with their mothers under the trees. Some of the
young bulls were off in the distance. It was hot. (Earlier at the Beyond
Organic Ranch at Koshkonong, the ranchers had just finished putting
their red Angus bulls out with their breeding-age heifers and cows.)
Jordan has eight 20-month-old red Angus bulls purchased at Kit
Pharo’s Cowboy Auction in Colorado in April. The bulls come from great
genetic stock and more than a decade of grass-based genetics.
"Currently our beef herd is mostly black with some red Angus, but we
are moving towards red Angus as they maintain a much cooler body
temperature during the hot Missouri summers," says Jordan.
"By turning our bulls out into our breeding-age heifers and our cows,
which total approximately 200 head, the breeding that will take place in
the next several weeks will result in a nice crop of approximately 200
calves next spring. By that time our land will be certified organic,
which we’re very excited about."
Jordan has purchased large acreages throughout the Oregon and Howell
County, Missouri, area, and this particular parcel is going to produce
high-quality spring water but will also have livestock as well as
orchards and vineyards. It is thousands of acres.
"Hey, hey, hey," Jordan shouted out to Joshua as the rest of us laughed.
Josh held a wriggling bluegill and then released the fish into the pond
with help from John, one of the folks on the farm.
“Watching my children drink, Green-Fed milk from our own cows for the
first time has been a true joy.” — Jordan Rubin
The Ozarks in southern Missouri, near West Plains, are located where
the highways known as OO, MM and PP meet. These beautiful lands continue
a long way deeper into the south: Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
This is really in the heart of America. -- The Bible Belt -- lots of
churches and Bible colleges. "I remember when I was sick how difficult
it was for me to have an assured supply of raw dairy products and fresh
raw vegetable," Jordan said. "People need this food, and it is so often
denied to them by regulatory authorities. For years I have gone to great
lengths to locate and purchase raw dairy products that have played a
significant role in my health. I’ve known since being healed from
multiple incurable illnesses through my faith in God and following
natural health principles that many of the foods I count on to nourish
me and my family would one day be less accessible. I decided then that
one day I would start my own beyond-organic farms and ranches. Praise
God that He has provided for me to do so. Missouri is one state that
allows non-pasteurized dairy via on-farm purchases and even delivery to
homes reminiscent of the good old days when the milkman would ring our
doorbell. Raw dairy products are rich in probiotics and enzymes and
peptides, nearly everything we need for great health—that saved my
life—but in California it was always hit and miss when it came to raw
dairy. I saw this land in southern Missouri and realized it had
everything we needed, and I became very interested in seeing more. I
like this land here, obviously, because of the wonderful natural
resources, sunlight, grass and most importantly, abundant live spring
water."
We stood right in front of the spring, looking at the rock rim and
the bubbles coming up. "We want to bottle this water," Jordan said, "to
make it available to people as it is very pure and rich in essential
elements."
Even in certified organic beef operations, cattle need to be grass
fed only about a third of the time, but to Jordan that’s just not going
to produce a highly nutritious meat. "Running a grass-only ranch, I can
only hope to raise one cow per acre of pasture," he says. "But the meat
we produce will be the most healthful you’ll find anywhere."
Jordan named his nutritional company
Garden of Life for a reason. He
really wants to grow every crop and maybe even have an ark full of
animals.
He wants to get back to basics. And that means a lot of people are
going to hear his message through his television program on the Trinity
Broadcast Network, his radio show appearances, seminars all over the
nation and the health and wellness books he authors.
There’s a reason my wife Ana and I are out here visiting Jordan’s
ranch. In my mind, it’s really no different than why when we were in
Italy in Florence or Rome we headed to the churches there. We all want
to be close to God.
West Plains, Missouri, with the Huddle House breakfast hut beside the
Best Western, along a long, lonesome strip of southern highway on the
way to Memphis, just this side of the Mississippi border, is as close to
God as being at the Vatican. In either place, you still need a place of
worship and you need the Bible and you need to put it into how you live.
That’s what Jordan is doing, basically. It’s why he wrote the
best-selling The Maker’s Diet and
Restoring Your Digestive Health books.
Jordan promises to change the whole dynamic of organic food
production, taking it to the next level. He’s going to change people’s
eating habits and hopefully their entire lives with no debt, no
handouts, nothing like that. Invest in what he believes, in the land, in
its bounty. Doing things right. That comes down to sustainability,
personal and generational.
He’s challenging the orthodoxy when it comes to creating foods and
beverages that are beyond the basic organic standards. Garden of Life
was one of the first companies of its size to offset all energy needs
with wind power and was using certified-organic raw nutrients loaded
with probiotics long before anybody ever knew about these nutritional
factors.
Jordan has always gone against conventional wisdom. I remember being
with him and Brian Ray and Jason Dewberry, the brain trust of the
company, on an alluvial farm field someplace in southern Utah where they
were growing wheatgrass and other greens for their top-selling Perfect
Food formula. He loved being out there on the land, showing me
hieroglyphs and rows of seedlings getting ready to sprout. The seeds of
Jordan’s vision on the land he is farming today were present a long time
ago.
Going contrary. It’s why he got better after a long, nearly fatal
bout with Crohn’s disease (nursed to health with raw dairy products,
grass-fed beef and supplements including homeostatic soil organisms (HSO’s),
beneficial bacteria that actually revitalized his gut and became the
formula
Primal Defense, the number-one-selling probiotic supplement in
America over the last decade). It was only after he visited dozens
(actually close to 100) of so-called health experts that he learned to
find the answers himself.
Garden of Life went on to become a most important nutrition company
in America for advancing sustainability and raw, whole-food nutrition
and now with 8,000 acres and with a vision as large as the horizon above
the Ozarks, Jordan and Garden of Life are once again pushing the limits
and raising the standards for your extraordinary health.
Jordan absolutely loves spending time on the land that he considers
himself a steward of and is so excited to share this experience with his
family and friends. He wrote this on Facebook: "Today on the ranch was
an exciting one. We visited our small dairy located in the town of
Rover. We have nearly 100 heifer calves born in the last few months. We
saw one that was born just hours before, and she looked like a tiny
beautiful reindeer complete with long eyelashes. All three of my
children rode horses last night, Samuel and Alexis for the first time."

Beyond Organic Ranch at Willow Springs had been holistically managed
for 13 years before Jordan purchased it and contains the best quality
pasture.
We walked down the trail, and he went over to the fence and knelt. Then
he stood up. He wiped his brow. It was really hot, and some of us from
the coast were really feeling it. But it was a perfect heat. A storm
might or might not dump rain. The cloudy skies had been teasing us for
weeks, providing little real hope.
"We haven’t had rain in a few weeks, and our pasture needs a drink,"
he said. "I am planning to put in an irrigation system to make sure we
never go without water for this long of a time period. This is
definitely challenging. But you know what? It’s something I totally
believe in and fulfills something in this society and for consumers who
want more than just simply organic."
He went on as we knelt and looked at some of the eaten-over pasture
lands. "If times should get worse (I personally believe they will), then
there will be a need for God to raise up tens of thousands of people to
provide the resources (water, food, shelter, clothes and energy) to meet
the needs of the people. I hope to fulfill part of this Joseph’s mandate
as one who was rescued from the pit and elevated to a position of
blessing so that I may be a blessing to many. I am praying for 10,000
Josephs out there to start beyond organic sustainable ranches and farms
to provide physical and spiritual salvation to others in times of great
need. I can find no greater purpose on earth.
He had a great meeting with Sue Baird, president of the Missouri
Organic Association to discuss a collaborative effort to promote and
spread the message of organic farming to Missouri and the surrounding
states. "Sue has told us that the organic certification of our 7,850
acres is currently the largest organic project in the state of
Missouri."
…As our time came to an end, Jordan told me about a great meeting
with Mike Bickle, senior pastor of the International House of Prayer (IHOP)
in Kansas City... Mike believes that 10,000 farmers will jump on board
with our vision and convert their land into the beyond-organic farming
model." If so, watch out, America, something’s coming from the heart and
the grassland. Pray for rain.
