Berry Green:
Two Parts Garden,
One Part Orchard &
A Dash of Rain Forest
by Melissa Lynn Block - Healthy Living Article
The health objectives of
Healthy People 2010, a set of
goals established by the U.S. government, include 75 percent of
Americans age two and up eating at least two daily servings of fruit and
at least 50 percent of this population eating at least three servings of
vegetables, with at least a third of those veggies in dark green leafy
or orange form.
Obviously, we’ve got quite a way to go before we can
even begin to meet the objectives set for Healthy People 2010. To add
insult to injury, more recent government recommendations have set the
bar even higher, stating that three to five daily servings of fruit and
four to eight servings of vegetables would be most beneficial.
Of course, the diets of Americans need a major fix,
and we do need to figure out what’s to blame and how to steer more
people towards foods with the power to help protect against cancer,
heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and senile dementia. As we move
towards Healthy People 2010 goals, what can be done to better nourish
those who are falling short in the vegetables and fruit department?
ORGANIC MEDLEY OF FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND RAINFOREST
HERBS
Even the most overachieving health-food-eater would
find it challenging to daily consume the many leafy green, cruciferous,
orange, and deep red and blue vegetables, fruits, and herbs recommended
by authorities on disease prevention. If you could, though, you would be
availing yourself of the best natural medicine on the planet on a daily
basis, and fulfilling your five-to-seven-a-day requirement. And you
can—with
Berry Green, a delicious super food blend using certified
organic ingredients and crafted by the nutrition innovators at
New Chapter.
Berry Green is a collection of 20 fresh, organic
fruits, vegetables, and herbs, concentrated by up to 10 times and gently
freeze-dried to retain maximum nutrition and fiber content. When you
can’t get that serving of vegetables or fruits, a tablespoon of Berry
Green powder —with 8 ounces of water or juice or a serving of
Berry Green capsules will fill in the gap.
Many of
Berry Green’s ingredients have been cultured with strains of
probiotic bacteria to further maximize the availability of the nutrients
they contain. New Chapter is at the forefront of the science of
culturing whole foods to create nutrient supplements that the human body
can optimally digest and utilize. Probiotics also happen to promote
gastrointestinal health and support a healthy immune system. Per
tablespoon of powder, Berry Green contains 1 billion active probiotic
bacteria, and the freeze-drying process used to make Berry Green
preserves the viability of those bacteria in the body.
THE NEW FOOD GROUPS
When you hear the term “food groups,” you probably
think meat, dairy, grains, vegetables, beans, fats and oils, and fruits.
If we are to truly heed the latest nutritional advice—perhaps best
summarized by bestselling author Michael Pollan in his book In Defense
of Food as “Eat food - Not too much - Mostly plants”—we may want to
re-think what a food group really is. Considering the nutritional
benefits of the plant foods concentrated in each serving of
Berry Green, it seems sensible to name some new food groups! An
overview:
The cruciferous vegetables group:
Berry Green contains red and green cabbage, broccoli, kale, and
Brussels sprouts, all of which are crucifers. These foods contain
abundant antioxidants and cancer-fighting, immunity-boosting
phytochemicals (plant chemicals), including diindolylmethane,
glucosinolates, indole-3-carbinol, sulforaphane, and isothiocyanates.
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, “Laboratory
studies have suggested that cruciferous vegetables help regulate a
complex system of bodily enzymes that defend against cancer…
Components of these vegetables have shown the ability to stop the growth
of cancer cells in various cell, tissue and animal models, including
tumors of the breast, endometrium, lung, colon, liver, colon and
cervix.” New Chapter’s unique culturing process liberates these
components, making them more accessible to the body.
The leafy greens group:
Deep-green leafy
vegetables are loaded with antioxidants like carotenes, vitamin C, and
bioflavonoids; fiber; vitamin K, needed for bone health; folate, the B
vitamin linked with prevention of cancer, heart disease, and neural tube
defects (the nutrient’s name is derived from the word “foliage”!); and
the minerals potassium, calcium, and iron.
The herbs group:
It’s difficult to overstate
the time-tested, scientifically supported benefits of the herbs found in
Berry Green.
Turmeric and
ginger inhibit inflammation, reducing the activity of
cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LO) enzymes believed to be
causative factors in most chronic diseases, including cancer and
cardiovascular disease. They are extremely rich in diverse antioxidants.
Cinnamon has demonstrated balancing effects on blood sugar,
which could aid in protection from diabetes. Rose hips are one of
nature’s richest sources of vitamin C and bioflavonoids, which
strengthen the cardiovascular system and fight free-radical damage.
The whole grains group:
Cultured, organic oats
and brown rice, both included in Berry Green, are nutritional
superstars. They are the best food sources of soluble fiber, which has
cholesterol-lowering properties; oats contain a specific type of soluble
fiber called beta-glucan, which seems especially good at lowering
cholesterol. Both foods are also rich in insoluble fiber—the kind that
helps to move wastes out of the body more quickly. Brown rice and oats
are rich in B vitamins, protein, and magnesium, as well as manganese and
selenium—the latter two of which are mineral cofactors for the
production of important antioxidant enzymes in the body. Oats contain a
unique, newly discovered class of antioxidants called avenanthramides.
These compounds appear to have special capacity for protecting LDL
cholesterol against attack by free radicals. An oxidized LDL particle is
known to be more atherogenic (heart disease–inducing) than an
un-oxidized one; it seems that these avenanthramides may play a
significant part in the heart-protective effects of oats.
The red and blue fruits group:
Blueberries,
cranberries, pomegranate, Concord grapes: Each of these fruits is a
veritable pharmacy in and of itself. Blueberries and grapes are rich in anthocyanidins, antioxidant compounds believed to protect against
Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. According to an
ever-expanding body of research, anthocyanidins and related compounds
found in deep blue and red fruits also support brain function, colon
health, resistance to some infections, and digestive function. Lab
studies indicate that pomegranate, an ancient medicinal food, may be
useful for promotion of heart health and protection against free radical
stress, primarily due to its content of compounds called ellagitannins.
Effects as diverse as blood pressure reduction, slowing of prostate
cancer, breast cancer, and lymphoma cell growth, and prevention of
cavities have been found in various studies of this ruby-red fruit.
WHEN YOU CAN’T EAT WHAT YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD
We know that there’s far more to getting your five to
seven a day than knowing you should, and we count our blessings that New
Chapter has given us a convenient and tasty way to get the world’s most
nutritious foods into our bodies when it would otherwise be too
difficult.
Berry Green is especially convenient when you’re traveling and
fast food or airplane food is the only option.
New Chapter donates a percentage of the net proceeds
from Berry Green to The Organic Center (www.organiccenter.org),
which informs the public about the benefits of organic products and
organic farming.
