Jordan
Rubin, author of “The Maker’s Diet: The 40-Day Health Experience
That Will Change Your Life Forever” and founder of Garden of Life
natural health supplements, understands that good health comes from a
good foundation. He believes that when we understand God’s plan for
health, we can unlock the door to success. He shares his ideas here,
in this cover story. After a health crisis
left him near death at the age of 19, Rubin turned to the Bible for
help and inspiration. What he also found was a remedy for health. In
his readings, he uncovered an interesting fact: In many ways, and
despite a lack of modern science and medicine, the people who lived
thousands of years ago, during Biblical times, were healthier than
many of us are today. To be sure, they suffered from unspeakable
diseases that we have since found cures for, but the way they consumed
food was the way God prepared it. Thousands of years ago, there was no
food processing or refrigeration; water was not chlorinated. There was
no ozone depletion or poor air quality. And there were certainly no
late nights watching Leno. Food was fresh and nutritious.
The Maker’s Diet is grounded in living a
“Biblically-correct lifestyle,” recommending the consumption of
organically grown foods and frequently referring to the Bible on
matters ranging from personal hygiene to getting tattoos. The book
provides sample menus, recipes and a wealth of information for helping
people everywhere attain and then maintain a healthier lifestyle. It’s
a 40-day plan that celebrates your health potential.
As Rubin explains when he speaks to people
interested in taking part in this 40-day experience: “If our health
potential was in a room and we didn’t have a key, we couldn’t get
through the door,” says Rubin. “No matter how many times we banged,
kicked, or tried to pry it open, without a key, the door would remain
locked.”
Key #1: Eat a Healthy Diet“ - One of the
things I always ask myself,” explains Rubin, “is did God create it for
food?” An average American gets 55 percent of their diet and calories
from non-food chemicals. The simple fact is we don’t always eat food
in the form that’s healthiest for the body. We strip nutrients out of
food when we process it. We grow phenomenal produce only to find a way
to get it to sit on a shelf for three to six months. In order to truly
eat a healthy diet, we have to know how our food was grown or raised,
how it was processed and preserved, and how it will be prepared.
Rubin believes that one of the worst inventions for
overall health was the refrigerator because it stores food well beyond
its shelf life and actually prevents us from eating fresh food. “Eat
what will spoil before it does and you’ll be healthier,” says Rubin.
“In The Maker’s Diet I recommend foods from all groups
including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds, grains,
legumes, fruits, vegetables, beverages, sweeteners and even deserts
but always following this foundational principle: Eat food in the
healthy form as it was created by God and you’ll also discover a
balance.”
Key #2: Supplement Your Diet with Whole Food
Nutrients and Supplemental Foods - Health is a complex equation.
The simple fact is, no matter how well you eat, there will be certain
essential elements that are missing. Rubin recommends a whole food
vitamin and mineral supplement, like those found at Garden of Life.
Cod liver oil is another important supplement, used
for 154 years and counting. Many generations that came before us have
used it for its health benefits. Today, fish oil is becoming more and
more recognized for its omega-3 essential fatty acids. Cod liver oil
contains DHA, which is important for brain development, for the
development of eyes, overall children’s health, and even for improved
concentration. It also contains EPA, another omega-3 fatty acid
essential for heart health, and improved skin tone. Cod liver oil is
also rich in vitamins A and D. “Most people don’t realize that 90
percent of our nation is deficient in vitamin D,” explains Rubin.
“Vitamin D helps prevent osteoporosis and some autoimmune diseases.
The richest source of vitamin D found in nature is cod liver oil.”
Other supplements key to unlocking your health
potential include green foods like Perfect Food from Garden of Life
and whole food fiber products like Super Seed.
Key #3: Practice Advanced Hygiene - Four
thousand years ago, the Israelites were able to prevent some of the
most dreaded diseases of the day. They lived longer and healthier and
obtained more wisdom than any other culture for the time. At the same
time, the Egyptians suffered from ill health despite having the most
modern medicine and technology available to them. How did some ancient
societies stay healthy? One way was hygiene.
Every day we are exposed to countless germs. We
touch each other on a constant basis. Of the five areas where germs
enter the body, the most prevalent are the hands, where 95 percent of
the germs become lodged underneath our fingernails. One way to control
that is by keeping nails short. However, practicing advanced hygiene
helps dislodge germs in a natural way by working with our body’s
natural defenses. One of the best products available is Clenzology
from Garden of Life. It goes beyond your basic hygiene, and is
designed to improve your current regimen with the ultimate goal of
helping you achieve greater, more vibrant health and well-being.
The simple five-step Clenzology process takes just
minutes a day to perform and focuses on cleaning the areas of your
body that most dramatically affect the overall quality of your health,
namely the hands, face, eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
Key #4: Condition Your Body with Exercise and
Body Therapies - The Maker’s Diet advocates exercise. What
diet regimen doesn’t? But it doesn’t have to be the strength training,
aerobic exercise that most people dread. It can be something that
Jordan Rubin calls Functional Fitness.
Explains Rubin, “Functional fitness trains us to use
everyday movements like bending to pick up keys, or lifting groceries
from the trunk. We flex our spine, bend our knees and more, and the
best part is that we don’t need equipment and we don’t need to go the
gym. Everyone can do it no matter what shape you’re in, how old you
are, or what your resource level is.” Five to ten minutes of
functional fitness type exercise every day can create more energy and
a better mood. It may also stimulate you to eat better for the simple
reason that you feel better.
One of the most important body therapies recommended
by The Maker’s Diet is sleep. It’s the most important
non-nutrient we can get and yet most of us don’t get enough. We are a
sleep deprived nation because we’re over stimulated at night and don’t
follow the natural cycle of sleep. Four thousand years ago, shepherds
tending their flock didn’t eat late and watch television.
It is a proven fact that if you get 30 percent less
sleep in one night, your effectiveness and concentration level is 36
percent lower. Our bodies are made to work with the circadian rhythms
of the Earth, and while it’s not logical to think that we’ll all go to
sleep at sundown and rise at sunup, it is logical to get a better
night’s sleep whenever possible.
Sunlight is another important body therapy. People
who get the most amount of sunlight get the most amounts of vitamin D,
which helps bones grow strong. Sunlight can also have a positive
effect on thyroid health and weight management.
Other body therapies that are important to engage
in: rest, at least one day per week; hydrotherapy; music therapy;
aromatherapy, and even fasting occasionally.
Key #5: Reduce the Toxins in Your Environment -
You can eat healthy, exercise and take supplements, but you can still
not be living a healthy life because of water, air, and skin and body
care products. Many of us drink purified bottled water because we know
that chlorine is harmful to our internal organs. But every day, we
stand naked under warm running tap water for 15 minute or more as we
shower. Our pores open and our skin absorbs toxins like chlorine.
Invest in a filter for the shower.
As for our air quality, we all spend too much time
indoors, breathing recirculated, unhealthy air. The simple solution
will astound you: Open your windows. Even if you live in areas of high
smog and pollution like Los Angeles, the air inside is up to 35 times
more toxic than the air outside. Change your air conditioning filters
more often. Buy houseplants, which can help filter toxins in the air
within a 100-square-foot radius. You might even invest in an air
purifier.
Now, for the skin and body care products. As we’ve
already stated about the chlorine in our showers, what we put on our
bodies gets absorbed through the skin. If you’re unsure, try this: Rub
a clove of raw garlic on the sole of your foot. Within 30 minutes,
chances are you’ll have garlic breath because the skin has absorbed
the garlic and it is now in your bloodstream.
Recently, people have become more and more aware of
the toxins present in hair color, shampoo, cosmetics and skin care
products. It’s getting better every day, but we can do more. “A recent
study at Johns Hopkins University tested nine people for evidence of
2,300 toxic chemical residues,” says Rubin. “Every person had traces
of at least one of the 2,300 in their body. The average healthy person
had 91 toxic chemicals present. Those toxins are stored in fat, and
Americans have the highest percentage of body fat in the world.” Be
careful about what you put on your skin and hair. Always check the
health and beauty aids section of your natural foods store when
shopping. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find there that’s positively
beautiful when it comes to skin care and cosmetics.
Key #6: Avoid Deadly Emotions - We can do
everything right when it comes to our health and still be unhealthy
because we get mad at traffic. It’s true. When you’re angry and
bitter, your immune system’s efficacy shuts down for up to six hours
at a time. “Emotions can cause great health problems and put acidic
poisons in the body,” Rubin states simply.
In fact, one of the biggest health problems we have
today is unforgiveness. It’s like wearing a 100-pound weight around
our middle. How do we get rid of it? Write it down. Make a list of the
people who have tried to hurt you in the past, and what they did to
incur your emotional wrath. By getting the wounds of the past out,
you’ll feel better. Then, once you’ve forgiven those on the list, tear
it up or burn it. Get rid of it as completely as you get rid of the
emotional weight.
Key #7: Live a Life of Purpose - This is the
most important key to unlocking your health potential, and it involves
waking up every morning and making a difference.
As Rubin says, “Success is for ourselves.
Significance is what we do for others.” There is an old saying that
goes something like this: No one ever gets to the end of their life
and wishes they’d spent more time at the office. We want to do things
for others. We need to in order to live a life of purpose. How do you
go about it?
Find your passion and know your talent. These are
the things that will give you the power to live your purpose. Make a
difference, and be significant in someone else’s life. This is the
time after all. As Jordan Rubin says: “People are desperate to change.
They’re tired of what they’ve been doing, and how they’ve been living.
They want the truth. Helping someone to transform their health is the
greatest gift we can give.” The only day that’s too late to start
unlocking your health potential is tomorrow.
