The Perfect Springtime Cleanse
by Jordan Rubin N.M.D.,C.N.C, founder of Garden of Life

One of the things that amazes natural health expert and bestselling author Jordan Rubin is that so many people think it is normal to have a bowel movement every two or three days. “No wonder so many people feel lousy!” says the Perfect Weight America author. “You should eliminate every day—and better yet, two or three times a day—just like infants do.” He adds that the retention of waste inside the colon presents all kinds of health problems: harmful bacteria, intestinal parasites, yeasts, and hemorrhoids.

In his book, Jordan recounts meeting hall-of-fame nutritionist Bernard Jensen, Ph.D., who owned a health sanitarium in Escondido, California, called Hidden Valley Health Ranch. The health expert had always been one of Jordan’s heroes, especially after he had read Dr. Jensen’s book Tissue Cleansing through Bowel Management.

Back in 2001, when Dr. Jensen was 92 years old, he welcomed Jordan to his home. After Jensen’s wife, Marie, introduced Jordan to him, Dr. Jensen, the esteemed health maverick, told Jordan to take out his notepad. Listening like a freshman student sitting at the foot of his professor, Jordan was reminded by Dr. Jensen that cleansing doesn’t just affect your gut but everything in your body.

“What goes in doesn’t always come out,” he declared. The bowel holds onto your waste materials longer than anyone realizes, he said, and the toxic material decaying in the large colon is a good place for health issues to get started. He called chronic constipation a “modern plague” and the greatest present-day danger to health. He blamed America’s love for fast foods and cluelessness about the importance of colonic cleanses. Dr. Jensen urged Jordan—as someone just starting to speak about health and write books— to carry on the message of good health. “I felt humbled that afternoon,” Jordan recalled, noting Dr. Jensen passed away three weeks later.

The meeting with Dr. Jensen was one of the major reasons why Jordan later asked his team of scientists and physicians at Garden of Life, including gastroenterologist Joseph Brasco, M.D., to design a gentle digestive cleanse that works in synergy with the detoxification process. It can be combined with the Perfect Weight America program, which is starting to create nationwide buzz.

This three-stage, thorough yet gentle cleanse is available as a Garden of Life product called Perfect Cleanse, which works naturally in the digestive tract to contribute to overall health and wellness.
Obviously, when many people hear the phrase “digestive cleanse,” they think of taking a harsh-acting laxative that will keep them running to the bathroom for the next week. Or perhaps they envision a colonic machine where a tube is inserted into the rectum and their bowel is flooded with several gallons of water in a matter of seconds.

But Garden of Life’s Perfect Cleanse system takes a less painful approach to wellness. Perfect Cleanse is actually a 10-day internal cleansing program that doesn’t disrupt everyday activities at all. In these budget-crunching, busy times, it is not expensive, time-consuming, or challenging to perform.

“You may think that embarking on a digestive cleanse is one of the wackiest things you could ever do, but I urge you to put away that thinking,” Jordan says. “If you’ve never tried this type of cleanse, I urge you to view this like a spring cleaning, a chance to complete a top-to-bottom scrubbing of every nook and cranny of your digestive tract. You need to reduce the toxic load that’s built up over the years from exposure to toxins in the air, water, and food.”

The Perfect Cleanse system involves following three simple steps:

1. Perfect Cleanse Purify - The liver carries toxins, metals, microbes, and other metabolic byproducts that must be eliminated through the gastrointestinal tract. Perfect Cleanse Purify supports the body’s cleansing function, particularly the liver, to help with natural detoxification.

Perfect Cleanse Purify is formulated with natural whole food botanicals and contains chlorella, which is widely studied for its ability to bind with environmental toxins and liver antioxidants that participate in the production of detoxification enzymes. Perfect Cleanse Purify contains milk thistle seed extract, cilantro, yarrow flower extract, probiotic whole food selenium, cracked-wall chlorella, aged garlic extract, dandelion root extract, and broccoli extract. Three capsules of Perfect Cleanse Purify should be taken 30 minutes before dinner with 8 ounces of water.

2. Perfect Cleanse Capture - The dietary fibers in Perfect Cleanse Capture help to trap and bind undesirable compounds in the digestive tract for transport from the body, which is crucial for healthy detoxification. Perfect Cleanse Capture has been specifically elected and combined into a patent-pending formulation that optimizes toxin absorption by the fiber. This formula is free of common allergens, including gluten, and is certified organic. It contains a certified organic blend of flaxseed, pea hull fiber, alfalfa leaf, barley grass, and chia seed. Perfect Cleanse Capture should be taken 30 minutes after dinner by mixing one scoop of powder into 8 to 12 ounces of water.

3. Perfect Cleanse Remove - The third and final step is Perfect Cleanse Remove, which works by assisting the trapped toxins to move smoothly through the digestive tract, gently sweeping the colon of accumulated waste. Perfect Cleanse Remove is a gentle formula with a digestive botanical blend that works while you sleep to promote a healthy, comfortable bowel movement.

Perfect Cleanse Remove contains natural magnesium salts, fenugreek seed extract, bishops’ weed, peppermint leaf, aloe vera, finger root, and fennel seed. Three caplets of Perfect Cleanse Remove should be taken before bedtime with 8 ounces of water.

You can expect some changes in your bowel movement when undergoing this type of digestive cleanse. Your stools are likely to become more frequent, softer, and change color. You may require more sleep and feel tired during certain parts of the day. All of these changes are a result of the body’s efforts to eliminate toxins.

So take a load off your digestive tract and cleanse. A 10-day Perfect Cleanse, as clearly shown in the book Perfect Weight America, will leave you feeling lighter on your feet and with a brighter outlook in just 10 days. This cleanse works in harmony with your body to naturally release and remove toxins so that you will feel like a better you. Unlike other harsh cleansing products, Perfect Cleanse allows you to maintain your daily routine at school, work or home without disruption. You will be impressed with the gentle results.

Just how well does Perfect Cleanse work? Jordan met Duong Sheahan at his Weekend of Wellness conference; at the age of six, she was one of the fortunate “boat people” who escaped to the United States after the fall of Vietnam back in 1975. “I’m a busy mom and live with my three school-age children and loving husband in the Chicago area,” she said in Jordan’s book. “Last New Year’s, following my sweet tooth marathon over the holidays, I knew it was time to clean house. Perhaps it was the sugar overload I felt in my system. At any rate, I began doing the Garden of Life Perfect Cleanse.

“I had incredible results the first day. By the third day, I felt like a revived person because the toxic buildup in my system was leaving my body. My energy level increased immensely as well as my mental alertness. Trust me; I need to be alert and full of energy every day.

“I’ve recommended Perfect Cleanse to a few of my friends, and they loved the results as well. The simple-to-use directions on the box are great: just follow the 1-2-3 steps on each bottle and you can’t mess up. I love that Perfect Cleanse is easy, safe, made with organic ingredients, and is whole food based. I also love the way it doesn’t introduce extraneous toxins back into my system. I even lost my cravings for sweet things, like chocolate, and that’s not easy!”

In his book, Jordan recommends a new nutritional weight-loss supplement called FucoTHIN, which has an interesting back story. In fact, it was Jordan’s admiration and friendship with the scientist who pioneered safe use of the active ingredient in fucoxanthin that led the company he founded, Garden of Life, to develop what today is arguably the hottest selling weight-loss supplement in America.

The story begins with the late Dr. Zakir Ramazanov, who was a good friend of Jordan’s. “More than anything we shared a passion for finding whole food ingredients that promoted vibrant health,” he says. Dr. Ramazanov was a classically trained biochemist and plant physiologist who graduated from university in Russia at the top of his class. After a stint in the Russian army, he served as the Head Engineer at the Institute of Solar Energy of the Soviet Union. It was there that he began experimenting with solar bioreactors and how they affected the cultivation of certain marine vegetables and algae, including spirulina and chlorella. As his career advanced and eventually took him to the United States, Dr. Ramazanov continued to develop cultivation methods that allowed for the human consumption of sea vegetables more commonly known as seaweed.

Why seaweed? Why not look at beets or cherries or apples? Dr. Ramazanov focused on seaweed based upon epidemiological data from some of the longest-living and healthiest cultures on the planet. “Scientists have found compelling data that links the consumption of seaweed to the long-term health of many Asian cultures, most notably the Japanese,” Jordan said.

Eventually, Dr. Ramazanov would move to the Canary Islands where he would work for the Institute of Technology and Marine Sciences. While living there, fucoxanthin, a brown seaweed extract that showed an ability to burn fat in clinical testing, caught Dr. Ramazanov’s attention, ultimately leading to the extract becoming the main ingredient in FucoTHIN.

Jordan said, “It shouldn’t come as a surprise that fat burners are in such high demand. After all, 66 percent of all American adults are overweight. Total health care costs associated with being overweight are over $90 billion a year. Only 9 percent of Americans eat the recommended five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day. In 1970, the average person consumed only two calories a day from high fructose corn syrup. In 2005, that number was 200 calories a day. We eat more of the foods that are horribly unhealthy, and we are getting fatter because of it.”

Fucoxanthin, contained in FucoTHIN, is a compound that is found in several different types of seaweed. Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid (similar to lutein and lycopene), which is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from free-radical damage. It is the pigment that gives brown seaweed its characteristic color and also participates in photosynthesis (the conversion of light into energy). When fucoxanthin was studied in the laboratory, it revealed a quality that makes it unique.

Most fat-burning products work by creating a thermogenic effect in the body. This is almost always done by stimulating the central nervous system. Creating a thermogenic effect is good. Thermogenesis is the process by which the body generates heat (energy) by increasing the metabolism above normal. While thermogenesis is good, creating this effect by boosting the central nervous system can be very problematic for most people.

Fucoxanthin is unique because it creates a thermogenic effect without stimulating the central nervous system. Fucoxanthin actually boosts your metabolism, specifically metabolizing visceral fat, the kind found around the belly, without giving you the jitters or causing you to lose sleep, reports Jordan. Instead of the shotgun approach of boosting your metabolism by stimulating the central nervous system, fucoxanthin breaks down visceral fat within the abdominal region, without the increased heart rate.

While the discovery of the fat-burning potential of fucoxanthin was groundbreaking, there was still one rather huge problem. In order to get the right amount of fucoxanthin to effectively burn fat, you would need to eat an outrageous amount of brown seaweed.

Dr. Ramazanov’s dedication to finding a way to make fucoxanthin available to everybody was nothing short of inspirational. He was so excited about the implications of the laboratory studies that he would spend the next seven years figuring out how to solve the problem at hand. The first step in finding a way to cultivate and concentrate fucoxanthin from edible seaweed was to choose the right seaweed. Dr. Ramazanov experimented with hundreds of different types of seed stock before finally settling on two specific strains, undaria (wakame) and laminaria (kombu), both used in Japanese culture. Once selected, he moved on to the next issue.

The reality is that to concentrate enough fucoxanthin from the seaweed, you would need to grow miles and miles of seaweed just to have enough to answer the demand created by this unique product. Thankfully, Dr. Ramazanov’s work with photo-bioreactors provided the answer. By controlling the amount of sunlight and using large cultivation tanks filled with pristine deep-sea water, he was able to perfect a process that greatly concentrated (200 to 500 times) the amount of fucoxanthin from the seaweed.

Finally, Dr. Ramazanov created a proprietary process used to extract the fucoxanthin and make it available for human consumption.

There is a sad note to the story. Dr. Ramazanov died before he could see fucoxanthin made available for mass consumption. Fucoxanthin is his legacy. Garden of Life is here to carry that on.

“Dr. Ramazanov told me that he believed fucoxanthin could regulate a protein called uncoupling protein 1, or UCP1, which controls the amount of fat stored in the body,” Jordan said. “UCP1, which regulates the activity of a key gene responsible for maintaining the body’s temperature, is found in white adipose tissue, or visceral fat. This type of fat, which usually surrounds the internal organs and sits under our bellies, is one of the major causes of ‘middle-age spread.’ White adipose tissue isn’t that white; it more resembles a disgusting yellowish glob of tissue. This type of fat gathers toxins, leads to low-level inflammation, and harms people’s hormonal health.”

In the summer of 2006, news came of a study coming out of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, where Japanese researchers studied the effects of fucoxanthin on more than 200 laboratory animals. The Japanese study found fucoxanthin effective in fighting flab and stimulating the UCP1 protein, which caused stored fat to break down. In tests on the laboratory animals, fucoxanthin resulted in a 5 percent to 10 percent reduction in weight. The Japanese researchers said that since the abdominal area contains abundant white adipose tissue, the compound might be particularly effective at shrinking oversized midsections.

Could fucoxanthin do the same for humans? Study leader Dr. Kazua Miyashita said his team hoped that fucoxanthin could be developed into a nutritional supplement that targeted harmful fat. Professor Miyashita said that their testing was the first to find that a natural food component had been shown to reduce fat by targeting the UCP1 protein, but dieters shouldn’t just eat a lot of miso soup or brown seaweed salad to lose weight because fucoxanthin was not easily absorbed from whole seaweed.

Garden of Life released FucoTHIN just before Jordan Rubin launched Healthy Toledo; great timing for the participants and great news for those following the Perfect Weight America program. What the Healthy Toledo participants were told is something that you also need to know. All the research showed that fücoTHIN’s fat-burning results took about five to six weeks to react after you started taking one capsule with each meal. The effects seemed to be gradual and measurable, providing a steady metabolic boost, but research suggested that by taking an advanced dosage of 9 to 10 capsules per day in divided doses, results could be noticed in as early as two or three weeks. Either way, don’t buy a bottle and think it’s going to work right away. It takes time for your metabolism to shift.
