Living
with Rosacea

What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that causes
patchy flushing and swelling, most commonly in the areas of the
forehead, cheeks and chin. Other areas of the body affected by rosacea
may include the eyes, neck, scalp and ears. When the eyes are
affected, they may appear irritated, bloodshot and watery. Rosacea can
come and go, eventually becoming permanent, and with time, ruddier
skin may appear with visible blood vessels, bumps and pimples. In
severe cases, nose tissue may swell, reflecting a bulbous nose. This
condition is called rhinophyma (rino-fi-ma). Famous rosacea sufferers
include former President Bill Clinton and W.C. Fields, with their
appearances of mid-face redness and bulbous noses.
According to a Gallup Survey, 78 percent of
Americans are unfamiliar with rosacea. Rosacea may affect people of
all ages and skin types. Typically, rosacea occurs in those with fair
skin and of ages ranging from the thirties through fifties. Often
genetically passed on in families, women are affected more so than
men; however, men frequently experience more severe symptoms. This
skin disorder can be physically and emotionally debilitating, and,
therefore, should be treated at the first signs for the best chance of
controlling the symptoms.
Dietary and Lifestyle Considerations
Although the causes of rosacea are not certain, much
can be done to control the symptoms with diet and lifestyle:
- Drink at least ten to twelve glasses of quality
water per day
- Take a good antioxidant and multivitamin daily.
- Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and
avoid spicy foods, hot drinks, caffeine and alcohol. Stimulants in
the foods to avoid can cause increased facial redness.
- Eat three small meals rather one big meal to
prevent outbreaks of rosacea.
- Avoid Aspartame and NutraSweet as a sugar
replacement, since they may cause flushing of the skin
- Avoid anger, stress, embarrassment and frightful
situations, as these all may trigger flushing of the skin and
aggravation of rosacea.
- Hot baths should be avoided, as well as icy cold
ones. Use water well below 98ºF for facial cleansing rituals.
- Try to exercise in a cool environment and avoid
overheating. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, though it
should be practiced in moderation.
- Limit your amount of sun exposure and use sun
protection.

enhancing, hydrating, and nourishing ingredients in addition to
Totarol to effectively soothe even sensitive skin types. While rosacea
and its causes remain a mystery to the medical community, effective
