Legends, Inspiration and the Raw Truth
about Your Health
Interview with Author of The Raw Truth Book -
Jordan Rubin By Healthy Living
John
Harvey Kellogg, Bernarr Macfadden, Weston Price, Bernard Jensen, Ann
Wigmore, Andy Szalay, Élie Metchikoff—these are a smattering of the
important historic figures whom you will get to know in the newly
released book called
The Raw Truth by New York Times best-selling author Jordan
Rubin.
Recounting his near-brush with death from Crohn's
disease,
Garden of Life founder and CEO Jordan writes about the miraculous
healing powers he obtained from raw and fermented foods in
The Maker’s Diet, a New York Times bestseller, and
Restoring Your Digestive Health. Jordan was among the first
modern health advocates to recommend traditionally fermented, raw foods
and probiotics, which he called
Homeostatic Soil Organisms, or HSOs.
These bacterial cultures, available in
Primal Defense and
Primal Defense Ultra from Garden of Life, together with a host of
other amazing nutrient-dense formulas like
Perfect Food (consisting of wheat grass, oats, and barley, as well
as seeds, and other leafy green vegetables) and the
Vitamin Code provided him with what he needed to sustain his life.
These formulas have all been perennial top sellers in the natural
products industry—for good reason. They deliver body-ready nutrients.
MAKING NUTRIENTS BODY FRIENDLY
Jordan and Garden of Life have played a significant
role in the popularity and maturity of probiotic cultured nutrients,
which take vitamin isolates and reverse engineer them with their “code
factors” to improve absorption and benefits. But this influence has only
come because he knows history and he has studied and known the people
making history.
The
Vitamin Code story that launched the
Garden of Life
Raw Revolution and the company’s fantastic line of RAW whole food
probiotic-cultured supplements could not have happened without the
amazing work of Dr. Andy Szalay. In
The Raw Truth Jordan recounts Szalay’s quest to discover the
code factors that enable nutrients to do their job.
Brimming with stories about natural health legends,
The Raw Truth introduces important concepts through their tales.
To introduce us to cleansing and detoxification, we learn about Bernard
Jensen whom Jordan calls “irrepressible, resolute, and positive.”
Dr. Jensen believed that the key to good health lay in
periodically “detoxifying”
the body through proper bowel management, Jordan writes, adding “Bernard
Jensen was a pioneer in colon cleansing.”
Jordan shares with us how Dr. Jensen developed his
philosophy of health. “Bernard graduated from chiropractic college, and
during his early years of practice and throughout his life, he traveled
to faraway lands—55 countries in all—to study the oldest, healthiest
people on the planet. What he found was that a diet of whole, natural
and mostly raw foods, a peaceful disposition, daily exercise, and
sufficient sleep were the foundation of living a long and healthy life,
but nutrition was the most important piece of the puzzle.
“Dr. Jensen believed that people needed to get away
from their day-to-day routine and concentrate on getting better through
eating the right foods and having their colons cleansed of the heavy
mucus coating thick with toxins and ‘noxious debris’ that had built up
over the years—if not decades.”
And from here Jordan shares with us his program for
detoxification and cleansing, using some of the important cleansing
supplements that he developed at Garden of Life, especially
Raw Cleanse.
We also learn about wheat grass juice and healing from
Ann Wigmore; the secrets of longevity from Nobel Prize winner Metchikoff;
and the power of traditionally prepared foods and diet from Weston
Price, among others.
Jordan really walks the walk. He loves raw foods and
he shares the raw food message everywhere he goes. His Beyond Organics
ranch in Missouri is beautiful grassland where he intends to make raw
foods and grass-fed beef available throughout the region and perhaps the
nation. His ranch was a lifetime dream.
Here’s what Jordan writes in
The Raw Truth: I had been suffering from Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s plays havoc on the body in many ways and causes various symptoms
that require medical intervention. It also causes the unlucky sufferer
to experience malabsorption of food, which in turn causes nutritional
deficiencies requiring a nutritionally intense diet and supplements.
This is why many Crohn’s patients tend to be rail thin. I was no
exception. After months of wasting away and two lengthy hospital stays,
I looked like a skeleton. My weight plummeted to 104 pounds at a height
of nearly six feet, one inch. When I left home, which was only to visit
doctors, I was confined to a wheelchair.
During the course of my illnesses, I visited 70
medical experts and was treated with the best of conventional and
alternative medicine approaches, but I saw no improvement. Desperate to
get my health back—as well as my life—I decided to travel to San Diego
and learn how to eat like my ancestors. By following health principles
dating back to biblical times, I believed that consuming raw nutrients
from living foods, along with beneficial probiotics, would put me on the
road to health.
As Jordan recounts in his book, “Something told me 15
years ago—I don’t know why—that access to raw, living foods would become
even more restrictive in the future. One afternoon, while gazing at the
Pacific Ocean from the boardwalk, I made two vows to myself:
1. One day I would have my own ranch and farm to grow
and raise these powerful raw foods for myself, my future family, and my
friends and loved ones.
2. One day I would create raw, whole food nutritional
supplements to provide everyone with a convenient way to get the power
of raw nutrients into their diet and lives.”
