Your 40s and beyond can be a great time of life, but can also determine the outcome of the rest of your life and your health. Why? The 40s+ can bring significant changes for women and men as well as a greater need for maintaining certain areas of health.

Women 40+ Nutritional & Health Needs:

For women in their 40s, peri-menopause can be a challenge. It’s the transition to menopause (which has its own challenges) that typically happens in women between the ages of 35 to 50 and can last, on average, for four or five years, but up to 10 years. That’s a huge amount of time, and can seem even longer due to changing hormones that can lead to hot flushes and flashes, trouble sleeping, foggy thinking, irritability, irregular periods, an increasing waistline and other uncomfortable side effects. Women 40+ can also have increased loss of bone health and a higher risk for heart disease.

What most women don’t know is that progesterone levels start dropping 10 years before estrogen levels, which can result in estrogen dominance health issues for forty, fertile females including fibroids, heavy cycles, weight gain, and a myriad of other estrogen dominant symptoms. According to recent studies, 70 percent of women ages 51 to 70 don’t get enough vitamin D. That’s staggering because vitamin D feeds your bones, supports breast health, a healthy brain, healthy cells, a healthy heart, supports the immune system, and many other functions. Of course, calcium, magnesium and vitamin K are bone-healthy nutrients, too. So, during your 40s (and before) is a great time to get in the habit of bolstering bone health.

A healthy lifestyle—including eating right and exercising—is more important than ever for women in their 40s. Eating for hormonal balance, bone and heart health is essential. Include fatty fish such as wild salmon and others which provide plenty of omega-3s, protein, vitamin D and calcium (for bone health). Eating plenty of fresh organic vegetables and fruits (high in antioxidants) are important, too. Nuts and seeds such as walnuts, almonds and flaxseeds are high in calcium and healthy fats. You don’t need as many calories in your 40s, either, so select foods that will give you the most nutrition for the fewest calories.

Exercise may be one of the best things a women can do to boost her emotional and physical health during her 40s—since peri-menopausal and menopausal women are at increased risk for metabolic syndrome, which sets the stage for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. Exercise can regulate cholesterol, control weight, strengthen bones, maintain muscle tone, lower cancer risk, boost mood and ease unpleasant symptoms. Resistance training and endurance exercise may boost metabolism, maintain bone mass, and help with weight control, while supporting healthy hormones.

Men 40+ Nutritional & Health Needs:

As men move into their 40s, hormones change, too. Testosterone levels taper off in the 40s, which can lead to fatigue, brain fog and irritability.
