The Kind Organic Collaboration
- Alicia Silverstone and Garden of Life
A One of a Kind Collaboration
Several months ago,
Garden of Life met with Alicia Silverstone, well known actress,
author and health advocate, to talk about nutritional supplements. Hauling her
luggage-sized purse with her, she proceeded to pull out several
multivitamin products available at the local health food store and
quickly proclaimed, “I’m confused. . .which of these products is
actually from organic foods that I eat and which of these do not start
off with chemicals?” To which we answered, “None.”
That was the shocking truth. Silverstone went to great lengths to eat a
diet of organic, chemical (and cruelty) free foods. But to supplement
that diet, there was not a multivitamin on the market that she could
take. Even the best fermented or cultured multivitamins started off with
chemical isolates and the tableted versions had harsh chemical binders,
fillers or coatings. What a disappointment. Silverstone wanted a
multivitamin that was made from the types of foods she ate—Certified
Non-GMO Project Verified
For Garden of Life, her challenge was music to our ears. We wanted the
same thing—we always have. Creating a vitamin that started off with
organic foods, concentrating those foods into meaningful amounts of
vitamins and minerals, was always a goal for us. And after years of
research, we were close to achieving it.
The process for efficiently harvesting the vitamins and minerals from
their organic food sources eluded us for over a decade. However, a few
years ago, we began our relationship with a scientist who holds multiple
international patents for his novel approach to harvesting vitamins and
minerals from organic fruit and herbs. So, we realized that fate had
brought us together at just the right time, and we joined forces with
Silverstone to create
Shortly thereafter, we had a major breakthrough with the last obstacle
to creating our Certified Organic multi—we figured out an entirely new,
organic way to make a tablet without using the common binders such as
magnesium stearate. The process was so novel that it’s now
patent-pending, and we call it, Clean Tablet Technology™. This newly
invented, entirely organic tablet system worked beautifully, and the
finished tablets looked great, had a pleasant smell and taste and an
organic coating making them easy to swallow.
We are thrilled to introduce Kind Organics—a multivitamin that is
Certified USDA Organic from real, whole foods, Non-GMO Verified,
certified gluten free and certified vegan. Kind Organics is made with
over 30 of the healthiest organic veggies and fruits available, such as
organic kale, organic sea kelp, organic broccoli, organic parsley,
organic ginger and organic blueberries.

I’ve always thought a lot about vitamins—probably more than most
normal people do! Because here’s the thing: I want to get all my
nutrition directly from the whole foods I eat, right? And I know that
eating like a superhero is giving me everything I need and then some
(except for B12—which almost nobody is getting enough of—and Vitamin
D—which is really only when I hole up in front of a computer instead of
getting out in the sunshine). But, my mind always comes back to this:
What if you need a little safety net? Something to make 100 percent sure
that you’re getting all the nutrients you need when life happens and you
find yourself without access to greens and other goodness every day?
This first came to mind when I was pregnant with Bear. My midwife
confirmed that I was pumping all kinds of healthy awesomeness to my
baby, but she recommended taking a prenatal as an “insurance policy.”
After all, sometimes I’d be traveling or working crazy hours, and even
though I’d be eating kind, I wasn’t always able to take it to that
supercharged, superhero next level.
So I set out to find the perfect vitamin—one that was vegan, whole
food-based (as in derived entirely and naturally from foods), GMO-free
and certified organic. Turns out that was no simple task! I could find
vegan-friendly options, but they wouldn’t be whole food-based. Some
vitamins claimed to be nothing but whole foods, but in reality they
included binders, fillers and other synthetics. What?! That’s like
saying your broccoli is nothing but broccoli and then sneaking in some
hydrogenated soybean oil. Gross!
Unfortunately, as I found time and time again, the vitamin market is
just like the processed food racket: producers can market themselves as
“natural” without meeting any major criteria. Seriously—they can make
that claim even though the “natural” sources come from GMOs, include
artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and on and on. They can also pile
a whole bunch of chemical isolates and synthetic fillers in there, put a
pretty green leaf on the label and call it a day. Some companies have
tried their best to keep it as natural as possible, but I’ve learned the
process of making vitamins from organic fruits, veggies and herbs is
slow and expensive. Kind Organics is really an important innovation for
these reasons. This is the first multivitamin to achieve the Certified
USDA Organic and Non-GMO Verified seals of approval, and the first to
use patent-pending Clean Tablet Technology!
If you’ve been led to believe that vitamins need all those chemical
synthetic binders and fillers and can’t be made with anything but real
foods—think again! Binders and fillers are the glues to speed up the
production process because they help keep vitamins from sticking to the
production equipment and can be used for aesthetic reasons (color,
shape, sheen, etc.). The cheap chemicals commonly used are often
hydrolyzed, fractionated stearates and other undesirable synthetics. In
addition to these additives being unnatural and unhealthy, many have not
been adequately studied or even labeled correctly, so beware of allergic
reactions! Even many well-intentioned companies don’t know how to make
vitamins without these artificial fillers and binders.
Throughout this tiresome research to seek a pure and wholesome
vitamin, my brain really started to hurt! How was it that products,
intended to be the very essence of plants and their nutrients,
continually stray so far from that? I realized that if I wanted a truly
great vitamin option, I was going to have to make it myself! I was
determined to give pregnant women a real safety net for their nutrition
during this crucial time—whether they just wanted the extra insurance or
they didn’t eat like superheroes. Then, when I dove into the project, I
had another realization: Everyone deserves this, not just expectant
So I teamed up with
Garden of Life, a wonderful whole-food nutrition company with
standout sustainability initiatives and the leaders in Certified USDA
Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified nutrition. Together, we created Kind
Organics, an entirely new kind of multi that is Certified USDA Organic,
Non-GMO Verified and free of synthetic binders and fillers. That’s
right—made with whole foods and love! Selfishly, I’m over the moon about
these products! I can use them whenever I’m traveling or making less
than ideal food choices on the run, whether it’s a spritz of B12 spray
or popping a multi. I’m so excited that this dream has become a reality
and that Kind Organics are now available for all those needing and
wanting pure, wholesome nutrition. And most of all, I’m happy that I
could save all of you the hard work involved in finding the best

—We caught up with Alicia to talk about her life and myKind Organics.
Extraordinary Health Magazine: With all of the projects you
have going on, is it challenging to juggle family responsibilities?
AS: It’s definitely a balancing act, and I’m always
re-prioritizing to make things work. Sometimes, I take on too much work,
so I have to make sure we’re carving out time to live instead of running
around like crazy people with impossible schedules.
EXH: When you’re not working away from home, how do you like
to spend time with your family?
AS: Every Sunday, I go to the farmer’s market with my son,
Bear and my husband, Christopher. It’s usually a two-hour event that
starts with me picking out our groceries while Bear runs around with a
bowl of strawberries in his hand or eats tamales. He loves music and
stops at every music person along the way, including a cool Rastafarian
who plays the drums. On other days, we’ll go to the beach together or
stop by one of our favorite spots such as chef Matthew Kenney’s MAKE
restaurant. We also go to the Farm Sanctuary so he can touch and connect
with the animals, or we’ll go on hikes together. We have a lot of
lovely, fun times! But honestly, every single day is the best with
Bear—waking up, snuggling and getting him fed and dressed—I just love
our everyday life together.
EXH: How do you make sure you’re getting the most out of your
family time together?
AS: For me, I think it’s because I realize this time is so
fleeting. I want to enjoy every moment of it, so I try to be very
mindful and patient. I don’t want to rush through anything with Bear! If
we’re on a walk and he wants to sit down and play in the dirt, I want to
be able stop and let him do that without worrying that I need to be
somewhere else. I’m always working towards balance and my healthy diet
not only makes me feel great, but allows me to be patient and present
and I can manage life so much better because of it.
EXH: How do you feel knowing that you are part of making the
first Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified multivitamin made
AS: I’m so excited! For years I’ve been looking for a vitamin
that didn’t exist. It was so frustrating to read all the chemicals that
were used in “healthy” products. It wasn’t just the synthetic binders
and fillers such as magnesium stearate that turned me off. It was
knowing that the entire pill started off as a chemical replica of the
great vitamins found only in food. Why couldn’t they just start with the
food itself? That’s what I wanted and now, I finally have it with myKind
Organics. We start with food and end with food.
“I’m always working towards a balance in life…”
EXH: When did you start paying more attention to the quality
of the vitamins and supplements you were taking and the ingredients in
AS: When I got pregnant, I started to look at vitamins
differently and realized they can be the insurance you need to get
enough of the proper nutrients necessary during this time. It was always
an ordeal for me to find a good “quality” vitamin. I started examining
all the ingredients in these supplements and noticed there were lots of
chemical additives and fillers that were definitely not food!
EXH: Why did you come to Garden of Life?
AS: I reached out to Garden of Life because they are not only
the #1 selling supplement brand in the Natural Products Industry, but
also leaders in Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified
EXH: How would you describe your collaboration with Garden of
AS: It’s great because, from the very beginning, Garden of
Life has been so keen on listening to my wish list and making sure
everything from ingredients to packaging is the best available. I think
one of the reasons Kind Organics is so special is because the standards
are so high.
EXH: Which is more important to you about
myKind Organics—the 30+ organic, family farmed foods in each
formula—or what is NOT in it such as magnesium stearate?
AS: It’s all very important to me. I don’t want synthetic
ingredients in my body. I want real foods because I feel more confident
my body will recognize food and use its nutrients to the fullest.
“...these supplements are truly unlike any
EXH: When we first started working with you, one of the things
you were excited about was the
myKind Organics B-12 spray. Is this the one you’re looking forward to
using the most?
AS: I’m excited about the entire product line, of course. It’s
great to have these completely clean vitamins that I can tell my friends
about. What makes the Kind Organics B-12 so cool is that it tastes
delicious and is so easy to spray in your mouth. I always like to have
some B-12 handy because it’s good for so many things. I use it whenever
I feel stressed out. And, of course, whether you’re vegan or not, you
need plenty of B-12 in your diet.
EXH: Since you thoroughly researched many of the prenatals on
the market when you were pregnant, what’s special about the Kind
myKind Organics Prenatal is a great choice for women because you can
tell exactly what you are getting just by reading the label. It’s loaded
with foods that are excellent for prenatal health—organic lemons,
organic kelp and others that women have used for centuries. This is the
only multi I would have taken when I was pregnant.
EXH: What do you want people to remember about Kind Organics?
AS: I wanted to take a multi from the same types of organic,
nutritious foods I eat in my daily diet. I didn’t want a bottle of
chemical isolates dressed up with organic fluff. The multi I wanted to
take didn’t exist, so that’s why we created Kind Organics. This is
something new that you’ve not seen before. Its 100% food with no
additives and no junk. Just real good food.
“It’s 100% food with no additives
and no junk.
Just real good food.”
